Fact:
Mummies were
first made in South America.
Although
Egyptian mummies are the best known, they are not the oldest. Rather, the
oldest human mummies made by mummymakers have been found in South America,
and they are about 5,000-7,000 years old.
This
fact, though, could change as anthropologists and archaeologists
discover more mummified remains around the world. Some anthropologists
suspect that native tribes from Australia, Papua New Guinea, and the
islands that lie between them may have practiced mummification as long as
9,000 years ago. One day, therefore, the oldest human mummies may be found
there.
