Plaster Casts at the Macellum

The macellum is highlighted in red

The Macellum was Pompeii's marketplace for meat and fish.  Today it houses two plaster casts encased in rather grimy display cases. The macellum is a major stop on the tour route, so tour leaders often give lectures near the cases of the two casts.

Tour groups regularly are lectured about the macellum and the plaster casts

One of the plaster casts

The skull of this plaster cast is visible because the plaster surrounding it has deteriorated over time

The second plaster cast in the macellum was poorly made; his facial features were carved rather unrealistically when the plaster did not reveal the person's face
