CRIME: EGYPT Egyptian smuggling ringleader sentenced; stolen mummies and other antiquities to be returned to Egypt (news24.com)

"[The ringleader] was convicted of stealing, hiding and smuggling precious artefacts from the pharaonic, Islamic and Coptic Christian periods to Switzerland and France, as well as bribing officials and falsifying documents."

" 'The mummy of [the Ice Maiden] is part of historical heritage' - declared Leonid Drachevky, plenipotentiary of the President of Russian Federation in Siberian federal district.... During his meeting with residents of the village of Kosh-Agach and the administration of Kosh-Agach region, the plenipotentiary stated the following: 'We are all educated people and I just feel awkward to hear of awakened spirits as though we live in the period of Middle Ages. If instead of work we start studying metaphysics, nothing good will come out of that.' "

 

UNUSUAL: OHIO Mummified body found in shuttered funeral home to be buried soon (toledoblade.com)

"Sherrill-Harden Funeral Home was closed and [the] owners...gave up their embalmers licenses after an inspector with the state Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors found eight decomposing bodies at their business in June. Seven of the bodies were identified, but [the owner] was never able to identify the eighth body, which was found in a mummified state. The unidentified woman will be laid to rest in a lawn crypt at the cemetery along with any of the unclaimed remains...."

"Archaeologists have found more than 50 mummies buried in deep shafts south of Cairo and dating from the first millennium B.C.... Some of the mummies...are in an excellent state of preservation for the period. Egyptians had used the network of shafts and corridors over several centuries, starting from the 26th dynasty (664-525 B.C.) and continuing into the Ptolemaic period, which ended with the death of Cleopatra in 30 BC. "

 

UNUSUAL: NETHERLANDS Dutch artist makes mummified gun from her own skin to protest violence (reuters.com)

"A Dutch artist has used a flap of her own skin to make a replica pistol to be shown at an Amsterdam art show next month...she had the flap of skin removed under local anaesthetic to allow her to make the pistol. The surgery left her with 16 stitches. She froze the skin, then defrosted it to make a replica weapon preserved in formaldehyde."

 

 DISCOVERY: EGYPT Mummies from 7th Century B.C. found in Egypt (washingtontimes.com)

"Egypt said Sunday new mummies in wooden coffins dating back to the 7th Century B.C. have been unearthed at the Giza Pyramids near Cairo...the team opened one of the coffins and found a 'perfectly wrapped mummy.' "

Archaeology: Well-dressed Song Dynasty mummy (archaeology.org)
"Archaeologists excavating a Song Dynasty tomb found the body, which is remarkably well-preserved, with bendable joints and skin that has retained some of its elasticity. The hair and teeth are also in good condition. Before burial, the woman's hair was coiffed into a neat top bun, and she was dressed in gold-colored brocaded garb and a belt carved with a floral motif." "What dazzles is the netting. The weaving was reconstructed by archaeologists, all the better to show its intricacy. It's made of Nubian gold beads and blue lapis lazuli from Afghanistan, costly elements strung in a lozenge shape that shrouded the mummy from neck to ankles."

"And now Schlett [the athlete] has decided to donate his body, upon his death, for display in a controversial exhibition that showcases all kinds of skinless corpses of human beings in various poses, shapes and sizes."

 

POSSIBILITY: RUSSIA More on Russian Ice Maiden mummy reburial: Science vs. superstition: Which will be victorious in Ice Maiden struggle (telegraph.co.uk.com)

"The mummy in question is an archaeological jewel. When her ornately tattooed body was found entombed in ice in an ancient burial chamber, the find was acclaimed as one of the most important in Russia's recent history. The Ice Maiden, as she was dubbed, had survived almost intact in the permafrost of the southern Siberian mountains, surrounded by a burial sacrifice of six horses in gilt harnesses."

 

CRIME: COLORADO More on Colorado murder case: Man convicted in case involving mummified remains (rockymountainnews.com)

"Michael Blagg was sentenced Friday to life in prison after a jury found him guilty of murdering his wife, Jennifer, whose mummified body was unearthed in the Mesa County landfill seven months after she disappeared."

 

EXHIBIT: TAIWAN Plastinated cadavers to be exhibited in von Hagens' Taiwan Body Worlds show (taipeitimes.com)

"The specimens on display are donated corpses that have been treated via "plastination," a body-preservation technology invented by Hagens. The process begins with the embalming of specimens in formaldehyde, followed by the replacement of bodily fluids and fat molecules with acetone, which is in turn replaced with plastic. The specimen is then positioned, hardened under heat, and infused with either silicon rubber or resin."

"PLASTINATION – the technique of preserving body parts indefinitely by removing fluids and impregnating them with silicone rubber – has received a lot of bad press since its invention in 1978 by Dr Gunther von Hagens, a medical doctor from the former communist East Germany. Plastinated specimens look like mummies as they are dry, odourless and lifelike. Von Hagens has courted notoriety with public exhibitions of them."

"A mummified body found at the home of a retired San Diego accountant and his companion after a fire that killed them both could be the man's wife, who has been missing for 28 years, police said on Thursday."

 

EXHIBIT: CHINA Move over Von Hagens: Chinese copycat creates own plastinated mummy exhibit (nzoom.com)

"A Chinese copycat of a German anatomist's exhibition of human corpses which opened in Beijing, is expected to generate more controversy in a culture where the dead are to be shown respect.... The Chinese version of plasticised preserved human corpses even carries the same name as Von Hagens'. It was unclear whether any intellectual property right was being violated. China is widely known for piracy."

"The mystery of the body in the box deepened Wednesday when a forensic exam showed only that the mummified remains are that of a short, white woman, between 42 and 71, who'd had at least one pregnancy."

"A preliminary autopsy Monday was unable to determine the identity or cause of death of the person whose body was discovered in a 55-gallon [cardboard] barrel sealed inside a wooden crate in the garage of the couple, who died in a fire last month, authorities said."

 

EXHIBIT: UK Mummy's face, skeleton revealed in new British Museum exhibit using computer technology (guardian.co.uk)

"...they wrapped him in bandages soaked with beeswax to keep out moisture and corruption, and buried him at Thebes on the west bank of the Nile, with a resin bowl accidentally stuck to his head. In the 19th century, villagers unearthed him and put his body onto a flourishing antiquities market. For the last 105 years his body has lain undisturbed in the British Museum."

POSSIBILITY: RUSSIA Earthquake curse of the Altai princess mummy causes local residents to demand her reburial (iol.com)

"Residents of Russia's Altai region say that a 25-century-old mummy that was dug up 11 years ago is causing earthquakes in their corner of Siberia and have demanded that it be reburied."
