A nosy neighbor decided to explore the
unoccupied home next door in Laguna Beach, California. Prowling through
the crawl space under the house, the neighbor came across a box that held
an assortment of old and forgotten items: some lamps, clothes, books--and
two mummified human skulls that apparently came from Peru.
The neighbor did not call the police
immediately. No, the neighbor removed the skulls and took them home, where
he displayed them for some time. Finally, his daughter convinced him that
he could report the discovery to police.
The police conducted an investigation. The
former owner of the house, now dead herself, was an amateur archaeologist,
who enjoyed traveling to Peru. She reportedly brought back the skulls as
archaeological artifacts
The skulls were turned over to a forensic
anthropologist at California State University at Fullerton for study.
Further information about the age and date of origin may be forthcoming.
