Bog Wheel at the Rijksmuseum, Leiden

The Dutch archaeology exhibit includes a wheel found in a bog which dates to 4600 years ago. Carved from wood, the wheel is in remarkably good condition for its age.

But why was it placed in the bog? Entire wagons have been found in Danish bogs. These were perhaps used for rituals and ceremonies involving the goddess "Mother Earth," according to the Roman historian Tacitus.

For more information about bog discoveries, go to the Bog Mummies at the Mummy Tombs.
