Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum in Hannover, Germany

 

 

The Niedersächsisches Landesmuseum in Hannover, Germany, is a good stop for anyone interested in bog finds and in the delightful city of Hannover itself.

The museum displays one bog body, Neu Versen Man, sometimes called Roter Franz due to the bright red color of his hair. He was found lying on his back in Germany's Bourtangermoor about 1900.

One special exhibit recreates a bog trackway, a type of road early people built so they could traverse the dangerous bog. These trackways were built by early people in order to travel across dangerous bog land. As you can see in the photo below, three different layers of logs were used to build the primitive road, besides the final top rails.

 

 

Also on display in the museum are assorted objects discovered in area bogs: a woman's shoe, a tunic, and a bucket:

 

 

This museum is well worth a visit!
