Santanaraptor with preserved soft tissue

    Where it was found

A small dinosaur fossil was discovered in Brazil in 1991. It is the Santanaraptor, an early relative of the Tyrannosaurus Rex.

     How many exist

Scientists believe that only three dinosaur fossils with soft tissue have ever been discovered before this one. Since then, a handful of others have been unearthed.

What's special about the dinosaur mummy

1. This is the only specimen of an extinct dinosaur species that eventually evolved into the T-Rex.

2. Although excavators were only able to recover the back end of the dinosaur (legs and part of the hips and tail), they also found fossilized soft tissue (including blood vessels and muscles). According to team leader Alexander Kellner of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, other scientists have found fossilized impressions of soft tissue, but this is the first time that fossilized tissue itself has been discovered.      Where to find more info

Dinosaur Mummies: Beyond Bare-Bone Fossils by Kelly Milner Halls takes the reader on a chronological tour of various dinosaur mummy discoveries, starting with the 1908 discovery of the Sternberg mummies. She moves on to other fossilized discoveries, including the baby dinosaur in Italy. Highly readable and highly recommended for kids.
