The Mummy Returns: Historical Background

Was there really a Scorpion King?

Yes, according to hieroglyphics found on a macehead by J.E.Quibell at Hierakonopolis in 1897-98, there was a king known as Scorpion (at least he is associated with the insect) who lived about that time, perhaps in Dynasty 0 (or 1, depending on how one dates the dynasties), before Narmer (according to Peter Clayton in Chronicle of the Pharaohs).

Existing evidence, however, suggests that the Scorpion did not unite Upper and Lower Egypt (most believe that Narmer did that), but the evidence is also incomplete.

So, this sketchy information provides the historical background for the movie this time--and the fantasy that Scorpion made a pact with Anubis.
