BOOKS ABOUT ANCIENT EGYPT

Disease

by Joyce Filer

Not technically a book about Egyptian mummies, Disease by Joyce Filer discusses the diseases, disorders, and traumas suffered by ancient Egyptians--as evidenced in their mummies and art.

The book has about 75 photographs (mostly b&w); about one-third of them are mummy-related. Did you know that dwarfism was fairly common in ancient Egypt? Did you know that tuberculosis, leprosy, and polio were known to Egyptians (one photo documents a mummy afflicted with leprosy). Did you know that head injury was a fairly common way to die in ancient Egypt, especially in men? Mummy photos reveal the painful truth.

Highly recommended for anyone interested in Egypt and/or disease.
