Mummies
by Joyce Milton is an All Aboard
Reading book (level 2) that introduces early readers to the art of
Egyptian mummification. Using a series of colorful paper cut-outs and a
few wrapped mummies, the artist captures the readers' imagination by
illustrating the text in a clear but imaginative way (nothing gross
here). The text itself is lean
and easy to follow, but it isn't for any child who is faint-hearted
about sounding out words that don't appear on a controlled reading list
(pharaoh, pyramid, Khufu--though hard words are given a pronunciation
guide in parentheses). This is an excellent
first book on mummies from Egypt.
